Joseph Pilates – creator of Pilates

Yes, that’s right. The creator of Pilates was a man! Pilates classes seem to be filled with females, but the brain behind the name did not design it to be gender specific. Pilates is meant to be enjoyed by everyone! We look into a few reasons why men should definitely be making the most of Pilates:

PILATES CAN BE ADAPTED TO SUIT ANY LIFESTYLE

Whether you are keen on lifting weights or simply returning from injury, Pilates can help any man target muscle groups that they may be neglecting in their workouts or day-to-day lives. Men usually focus heavily on large muscle groups and this can lead to injury and stiffness. Partaking in Pilates will strengthen and lengthen deeper muscles, allowing the body to function to its maximum potential.

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE

The central concept of Pilates is focussed around your abdominals and your core. Unfortunately, men are more likely to develop fat around their abdomen than women – hence the ‘beer belly’ look. Not only will Pilates help you hone that six pack, but it also helps to create a centre that you can move more efficiently.

BUT I ALREADY DO CRUNCHES…?!

Pilates uses unique methods of working the abdominals slow, steady and static positions. Crunches only target the superficial, ‘Hollywood’ muscles which don’t actually aid in the support of your spine (which is kind of important!). When you have a strong core, you will find lifting heavy objects, bending and standing actions a whole lot easier!

FLEXIBILITY

Tight muscles lead to soreness and injury, especially if you are keen gym-goer or even if you sit behind a desk all day. Pilates will gently stretch the body as you move through the exercises. This will help prevent injury or pain and will increase your overall range of motion.

INCREASE YOUR BODY AWARENESS

Pilates requires very little downtime between sessions, unlike the gym. You can take part in Pilates every day, even in between gym sessions! It will help you improve both your mind and body awareness through conscious breathing and movement. Pilates can help you understand your weaknesses and will give you the tools to develop and enhance your strength.

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES USE IT – SO IT MUST BE GOOD!

Sports professionals from Tiger Woods to Cristiano Ronaldo are known to use Pilates. The movement and flexibility can help with anything from a golf swing to agility when weaving in and out of players on the football pitch. It not only helps with the physical performance, but also boosts athletes’ ability to focus. So, there you have it! If you’re male and are on the fence, we hope that this will give the little nudge to sign up and take part in a Pilates class!
